Database Cleaner Pro Guide

Database Cleaner Pro is a WordPress plugin from Meow Apps that scans the WordPress database for records with no active reference — post revisions, orphaned postmeta and usermeta left behind by removed plugins, expired transients, and unused terms — and presents them for review before deletion. It runs from the WordPress admin rather than a database client, and does not delete anything automatically; every flagged item requires the site owner to select it before it is removed or the table is optimised.

What the Scan Checks

A scan groups results by data type: post revisions beyond WordPress’s default retention, orphaned meta rows (options, postmeta, or usermeta referencing a post, user, or plugin that no longer exists), expired or stale transients, and unused or duplicate terms in the taxonomy tables. Each group is a candidate for cleanup, not an automatic deletion — the site owner reviews the list, deselects anything they recognise as still in use, and confirms the remainder.

Orphaned Data, Specifically

“Orphaned” here means a database row whose parent record is gone: a plugin’s settings row left in wp_options after the plugin was deleted, or postmeta pointing to a post ID that no longer exists. These rows don’t break a working site, but they accumulate on installations that have gone through multiple theme changes, plugin trials, or content migrations, and they add unnecessary rows to backups and to queries that scan those tables.

Workflow

  1. Back up the database before running any cleanup — required, not optional, since deletions are not reversible from inside the plugin.
  2. Run a scan from the plugin’s dashboard screen.
  3. Review each category and its listed rows.
  4. Deselect anything tied to a plugin or feature still in active use.
  5. Clean or optimise the remaining selected items.
  6. Check the site’s forms, checkout flow, and login after cleanup, since a mistaken selection during review can still be applied.

When It’s Useful

The scan is most useful on installations with a long history of plugin and theme changes — agency-managed sites, sites that have been through multiple redesigns, or sites where several plugins were trialled and removed without a clean uninstall. On a new or low-churn site, a scan will typically return little to clean. Database Cleaner Pro does not address page load time caused by hosting, image weight, or render-blocking scripts; it only affects the size and structure of the database tables. Treat it as one step in a maintenance routine, not a general performance fix.

What It Does Not Do

The plugin cannot determine whether a record with an unfamiliar name is safe to remove if no plugin or theme is currently active to claim it — a deactivated-but-still-installed plugin’s data will not show as orphaned. If a label in the scan results is unclear, the safer action is to leave it and investigatee its source before deleting it. Test cleanup actions on a staging copy of the site before running them against production, particularly on sites with custom code that reads options or postmeta directly.
